Start an Italian Food Affair at Canto West Village

Opening the red door on the winding, cobblestoned Perry Street in the West Village to enter Italian restaurant Canto is just the start of a romantic journey through the small towns of Italy. The dimly lit and intimate setting boasts exposed brick walls and permeates an aroma that is reminiscent of an Italian grandmother’s kitchen—don’t tell Nonna, but maybe even a bit better-tasting.

Part owner and operator Djamel Omari has long been a beloved fixture in the West Village for his love of good food and wine, and most importantly, people, which is why he is so passionate about bringing guests together over authentic Italian cuisine. Their flower-decorated Vespa in front sets the scene, but this hotspot is more than just Instagram worthy.

If you feel like you have been transported to the charming streets of Italy, it’s because interior designer Emily Hsu drew inspiration from the idyllic country’s friendly eateries and scenic ambiance. Housed in a historic building, Canto also pays homage to the neighborhood they have been so welcomed by.

Canto is the only place you will want to go when craving real, rustic, and uncomplicated Italian food. Tasty traditional plates include Parmigiana di Melanzane and rotating Carpaccio choices. Come back and make sure to try all varieties: Polpo, Tuna, and Beef. Their Arancini di Risotto, or Sicilian-style rice balls, stuffed with mozzarella, are a must-try, while the slow-cooked Beef Short Ribs served with roasted potatoes, Lasagna Bolognese, Impepata di Cozze, or mussels cooked in a lemon and garlic sauce, as well as their signature Angus beef burger with Swiss cheese and pickled dijonnaise sauce are just some of our favorites. Fusilli al Pesto e Zucchini, a traditional pesto Genovese served with zucchini and sun-dried tomatoes, and fresh fish dishes such as the Pan-Seared Branzino in a lemon caper sauce with mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach are other delicately prepared plates. From a Tartufo to a Tiramisu, finish off your Italian experience with a taste of the dolce vita.

Their extensive wine list features bottles from around Italy, while their signature cocktail list, created by Kiki Clarkson, offers authentic Italian ingredients, mixed with that special something that can only be described as French flair. You’ll be sure to find Chartreuse, Demerara, pear brandy, egg white, celery bitters, Italicus bergamot liqueur, Prosecco, and Bella Canto gin.

Turn any day into an Italian food affair with a glass of wine from your favorite region and a charcuterie plate of the freshest meats and cheeses.
