Solving Kids’ Cancer Honors Carolina Herrera and Donna Karan at Spring Celebration Gala
The fashion icons were recognized for their significant contributions to pediatric cancer research.
Solving Kids’ Cancer (SKC) held its annual Spring Celebration benefit Gala in New York City on May 17th, 2023 to honor two long-time dedicated supporters, Carolina Herrera and Donna Karan. While Karan wasn’t in attendance, Carolina Herrera shared sweet moments with some of the brave children on stage as they shared their favorite superpowers and dreams for the future.
The fashion icons have supported the charity since the organization’s first New York City benefit in 2010, lending their voices to elevate the public profile of Solving Kids’ Cancer.
“Solving Kids’ Cancer is my favorite organization. They take care of the kids in a fantastic way. And something very important – they make them smile again. Thank you for this wonderful evening,” remarked Herrera after receiving her award and calling the children to the stage to accept it with her.
Sharing the spotlight, Dr. Joshua Schiffman, Co-Founder and CEO of PEEL Therapeutics, was also be recognized for his extraordinary contributions to the development of new treatments for children fighting cancer.
Now in its 15th year, SKC draws leaders from the finance, media, entertainment, sports and fashion industries to raise funds to advance new treatments for children facing the most fatal pediatric cancers.
The organization has a global footprint of international collaborations with like-minded nonprofits and pediatric cancer research institutions. With the expansion of an SKC-funded clinical trial this year, the donor-funded work of SKC will be found in over 250 cancer centers across 24 countries. This kind of progress would not have been possible without the steadfast support of noteworthy key individuals.
“Every nonprofit yearns to have some recognizable names associated with them, to help give voice to the organization’s mission and work. To have these two icons of the fashion industry, who both support and believe in our work is immeasurable in its impact,” said Scott Kennedy, SKC co-founder and executive director. “Their presence helped launch our position as a global influence in the pediatric cancer research landscape. We are so deeply grateful to them both.”
The Spring Celebration Gala took place at the Mandarin Oriental New York with a cocktail hour followed by a seated dinner. The 200 guests in attendance were treated to commentary from SNL Producer Seth Herzog, musical performances by Corey Glover and Mike Ciro and an inspiring Gold Star Award Presentation to the children who have battled cancer. A silent auction, mingling and dancing closed out the night!
