Mishka SOHO: Moscow Off the Hudson

There is no denying that the SoHo dining scene revival is bubbling once again in New York City. On every corner is a unique dining option in SoHo and we are particularly intrigued with Mishka SoHo on Broome Street and its delightful narrative as a bit of ‘Moscow on the Hudson’.  Actually, Mishka SoHo is more authentic Odessa than Tverskaya Street, but when you need to relish your inner Russophile, this is the place to find the coolest, chicest Russian, Georgian, and Ukrainian emigres who now call NYC home. For them, Mishka SoHo has quickly become their social nexus to eat great home cooking and listen to really good live music.  Every time I visit Mishka SoHo I somehow expect an Irina Shayk type to swan through at any minute.  And if that famous supermodel did show up and felt like feeding the paparazzi that trail her constantly — then she would ask to sit outside by the vast iconic mural of the Statue of Liberty which forms the backdrop to Mishka SoHo and the chicest outdoor dining setting anywhere in Manhattan. It is that kind of vibe and ephemera and it must be because of the caviar offerings that have prime of place on the menu. And the delicious dumplings and the chilled vodka and the serious attention to tea and all those traditions.

Marina Genel is the force majeure behind Mishka SoHo.  Her talented, young chef Anton Churchin serves up the most delicious Chicken Stroganoff anywhere on this island. ”The whole idea at Mishka SoHo is to elevate and tweak and re-invent our authentic classical Eastern European favorites with an obvious nod to healthy eating,” says the utterly funny and charming restaurateur.  If Pelmenis (Russian dumplings), Stroganoff and the must-order Chicken Kiev intrigues– well this is the SoHo nexus to scarf it all down and top it all off with the expected Blinis and Ossetra caviar.  Other classics here include the House Cured Herring, the Mushroom Vareniki, or the Russian Dips Trio of eggplant caviar, squash caviar and black bean hummus for the true vegan lurking within.
