Travel More, Spend Less: Insider Tips for Budget Adventures

Travel is big money in some respects. In 2024, the online travel market across the world generated more than USD 650 billion. But what if your finances are stretched? Is travel still affordable in 2026?

Careful planning can lead to better travel and more enriching experiences. Paying for four- or five-star luxury doesn’t mean you have the best travel experience. There are a surprising number of people who actively choose the options we’re going to highlight—not because they don’t have the means for a high-budget vacation, but because traveling is much more than just affordability.

Book smarter, not earlier

Many people traveling on a budget choose to book earlier because they think it means getting the best deal. It’s not necessarily true. It can work if you’re traveling during peak periods, but outside of these times, prices fluctuate based on demand, algorithms and competition.

Flexibility is going to save you money:

  • The cheapest flights tend to be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
  • For domestic flights, it’s cheapest 1-3 months ahead
  • For international flights, it’s cheapest 2-8 months ahead
  • Shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) are cheaper than summer/winter
  • Friday and Monday are expensive days to travel
  • Saturdays can be surprisingly cheap for domestic flights

Time your destination right

Traveling before or after peak times can reduce your costs significantly. If you choose to go just outside of these times, you’ll usually still get decent weather and full access to attractions.

There’s also the benefit of the less-popular months giving you something that peak months cannot: space. Fewer crowds, fewer queues, better service, and a generally more relaxing experience of the place.

Eat like a local

Don’t be fooled into thinking you have to spend a lot on meals on holiday. Remember, the locals won’t be.

Food is one of the easiest holiday overspends. Especially if you’re in a tourist area. Restaurants closest to the major attractions will have higher prices. They’re convenient. They rely on foot traffic, not repeat customers.

You can often get a better deal if you look elsewhere both in terms of quality and cost. Look beyond the big tourist hotspots for restaurants that offer specials. Local markets, bakeries, and street food stalls offer fresh, authentic food at reasonable prices.

A simple strategy is to ask locals where they eat. A café recommended by a shop owner or a busy spot filled with regulars will deliver on authenticity without the tourist markup.

Make the most of digital tools

A smartphone is a great travel tool. Gone are the days of huge guidebooks to carry around in your suitcase. You’ve got mapping, travel tips, and info at your fingertips:

  • Map apps to help you budget travel, so you can walk or find local bus and tram routes instead of taking taxis
  • Uber (or similar) apps so you know how much a journey will cost before you get in the taxi
  • Currency conversion tools so you know how much something is in real terms

Don’t forget, though, public Wi-Fi is convenient, but it isn’t always secure. When you’re planning trips or making bookings, you can expose personal and financial data. Having reliable scam and fraud protection set up on your devices in these cases helps keep your money safe. Otherwise, your budgeting might go out of the window entirely and you could be worse off.

Spend less

A big part of budget travel is avoiding the common places where people overspend without realizing it. Watch out for the major culprits: airport currency exchanges, overpriced airport food, last-minute bookings, and overpacked itineraries that leave no time to enjoy free experiences. Prioritize what matters most to you, and affordable travel is entirely possible when planning ahead, following traveler tips, and looking for discounts on services like booking platforms and NordVPN influencer codes.
