How the NFL schedule really works

Jacksonville hosted Philadelphia at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday 11 October, kick-off 2:30pm. Host is the right word, strange as it looks. The Jaguars are the designated home side at a ground more than 4,000 miles from EverBank Stadium, and they surrender a date in Florida to be there. Anyone weighing the Philadelphia Eagles @ Jacksonville Jaguars odds is looking at a fixture that nobody sat down and picked.

The formula names the opponents

Every club plays 17 games across 18 weeks, 272 in all, and 14 of those matchups are settled by rotation before anyone considers the merits. Six come against divisional rivals, each of the three played twice. Four come against one other division in the same conference, two at home and two on the road. Four more come against a division in the other conference on the same terms. The rotation is built so that every team meets each of the other 31 at least once in any four-year period.

Jacksonville’s 2026 card shows the machinery working. Six dates against the AFC South, four against the AFC North, and four against the NFC East, which is where Philadelphia comes in.

The last three games depend on last season

The three remaining fixtures are the placings games, and they are the only part of the formula that rewards or punishes. Two are against the teams that finished in the same position in the two conference divisions a club is not already scheduled to face. The Jaguars won the AFC South at 13-4 in Liam Coen’s first season, so they drew New England and Denver, winners of the AFC East and AFC West.

The 17th game applies the same logic across the conferences, against a division not otherwise on the card. Jacksonville therefore travel to Chicago, the NFC North champions. Travel, because hosting rights for that extra fixture alternate each year and 2026 belongs to the NFC. Every NFC club has nine home games this season and every AFC club has eight, which is worth remembering for anyone pricing up NFL betting markets where home field carries weight.

Then the hard part begins

Naming 272 matchups is the easy half. Putting a date, a kick-off time and a broadcaster on each one is what occupies the league’s scheduling team, led by Hans Schroeder, Michael North and Onnie Bose, for months. There are roughly a quadrillion ways to arrange a season and more than 26,000 factors to weigh, among them stadium availability, travel distance, primetime balance and competitive fairness. The NFL runs the problem across cloud computers on AWS and works through tens of thousands of complete, playable schedules before choosing one.

That stage is where the season takes its recognisable shape. Byes run from Week 5 to Week 14 and no earlier or later. Nine games are staged abroad in 2026, across four continents, seven countries and eight stadiums, three of them on consecutive Sundays in London. The 2026 season even opened on a Wednesday night in Seattle, a rematch of Super Bowl LX, which the Seahawks won 29-13.

The most deliberate choice of all comes at the end. All 16 games in Week 18 are division fixtures, three on 9 January and 13 on 10 January, and that is the 17th consecutive year the league has finished that way. It is the one week where every result carries the weight of a rivalry and a playoff place at the same time.

What it leaves Jacksonville with

Back-to-back home games in England, Philadelphia at Tottenham and Houston at Wembley a week later, followed by the Week 7 bye. Two of their eight home dates are gone before November, both spent abroad, and the reward is a fortnight in London and a rest attached to the end of it.

None of that was designed for the Jaguars. It fell out of a formula, a rotation, last January’s standings and a very large amount of computing. The schedule is not a fixture list somebody wrote. It is the answer a machine gave to a question with a quadrillion possible answers, and Jacksonville’s version of it starts in north London.
