Biohacking, Refined: The Experimental Compounds on Wellness Insiders’ Radar
Biohacking has grown up. The word once conjured garage experiments and extreme routines, but today’s wellness conversation is often framed as more selective and evidence-aware. The first name is BPC-157, a synthetic peptide related to a sequence described in gastric proteins. It has developed a reputation in recovery circles for tendon, muscle and soft-tissue healing. A 2025 systematic review in Sports Health found predominantly positive findings in laboratory and animal studies, while emphasizing the absence of rigorous clinical evidence for musculoskeletal use in people (Vasireddi and colleagues, 2025). Animal findings establish a research rationale, not a proven human recovery treatment.
That distinction matters. BPC-157 is not FDA-approved as a medicine, and it appears on the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List. The interest is understandable, but human effectiveness, appropriate dosing and long-term safety have not been established.
The longevity staple
The second name is NAD+, a coenzyme that has become shorthand for part of the longevity movement. It is present in every cell and central to energy metabolism. NAD metabolism changes with age, but the pattern varies by tissue. In a 2018 randomized trial, the precursor nicotinamide riboside raised NAD-related metabolites and was well tolerated during the study period in healthy middle-aged and older adults (Martens and colleagues, 2018). Can the supplier produce an independent certificate of analysis for this exact batch? Is the compound approved for anything, or purely research use? And what does my own clinician, who knows my bloodwork, make of it? Those four questions quietly separate the discerning from the merely fashionable, and they cost nothing but a moment’s discipline before reaching for something new.
It is worth naming the regulatory backdrop too. The FDA has identified safety concerns involving several unapproved peptides and has evaluated whether nominated substances should be eligible for pharmacy compounding. In December 2024, its advisory committee voted against placing the evaluated CJC-1295 forms on the 503A Bulks List. Regulatory review should not be confused with endorsement, and online availability does not establish safety or effectiveness.
A few principles define a considered posture. Favor transparency, but understand its limits. Batch-specific independent testing may provide evidence about identity and selected purity measures, while leaving sterility, endotoxins, aggregation and other risks unanswered. It also helps to remember that no peptide replaces the foundations that the wealthiest and the wisest still rely on: real sleep, genuine movement, good food, and managed stress.
