A Buyer’s Guide to Luxury Yachts and Catamarans in Hong Kong

A shaded cockpit, private cabins and enough room for your usual guests can matter more than a longer foredeck or polished listing photographs.

Start with the outings you expect to make, then compare boats that suit them.

Buying a yacht in Hong Kong also means confirming where you’ll keep it, what ownership will cost and which checks you need to complete before you sign.

Key takeaways

  • Choose by use. Guest numbers, overnight plans and your interest in sailing help determine the hull type before you compare brands.
  • Confirm the berth and budget. Get written confirmation that a berth fits the boat, plus an itemized annual cost estimate.
  • Agree purchase conditions. Set out survey, sea-trial and title-check requirements, including how they affect your deposit, before paying it.

Choose the yacht around your time on the water

Catamarans can be motor yachts or sailing yachts. The practical choice here is between three configurations: a monohull motor yacht, a power catamaran (two hulls, engines only) and a sailing catamaran (two hulls, sails and usually auxiliary engines).

Your usual outing. Write down the trip you’ll make most often. How many guests will typically come aboard?

Will you anchor off a beach for lunch and return by evening, or stay out overnight?

How much shaded seating will you need in summer?

Consider whether you’d enjoy handling sails or prefer a motor yacht, and whether you plan to operate the boat yourself or employ crew.

Hull and propulsion. Beam means width. Catamarans carry their width along most of their length. Aquila publishes an overall length of 12.64 metres and a beam of 6.4 metres for its 42 Yacht power catamaran.

A monohull of similar length is usually narrower, so a berth that suits one may not accept the other. Compare each boat’s actual dimensions with the berth limits before committing to a layout.

New or pre-owned. For a new boat, confirm the specification, warranty coverage, exclusions and delivery schedule in writing. Assess a pre-owned boat’s condition and service history alongside its age.

When browsing for a catamaran for sale through ASIAMARINE, compare location and dimensions first, then request written confirmation of the specification and asking price.

ASIAMARINE’s listing filters separate power from sail and narrow results by location, length, year, brand and price. Its Lagoon range also includes power catamarans.

Price the whole ownership experience

Purchase price. Asking prices are starting points for discussion, and, as with luxury home listings, the photographs rarely tell the whole story. A Marine Italia Asia listing accessed on October 15, 2026 showed a new 2025 Azimut Magellano 60 located in Hong Kong at EUR 2,970,000.

This was an asking-price snapshot for one monohull motor yacht, not a completed sale, a guaranteed offer or a benchmark for the wider market.

Regional listings use different currencies, so compare prices in the same currency and check what each includes.

The home berth. Secure the berth before, or alongside, the boat. Lantau Yacht Club publishes a capacity of 148 slips, including 38 superyacht berths.

You’ll still need to confirm availability, eligibility and price. Ask any marina or mooring provider to confirm in writing the maximum length, beam and draft (depth below the waterline) it accepts, availability, contract length, notice terms and storm arrangements.

The Hong Kong Observatory identifies May through November as months in which tropical cyclones may strike Hong Kong, making those arrangements a routine ownership consideration.

The annual allowance. Request a vessel-specific written budget. Itemize berth or mooring fees, insurance, routine servicing, haul-out and antifouling, cleaning, fuel, any crew costs and a contingency for repairs.

ASIAMARINE lists technical support, maintenance, survey and licensing, insurance and berth or mooring assistance among its management services.

Marine Italia Asia’s Marinetec operation lists fibreglass repairs, paint spraying, carpentry, antifouling and teak work.

Request a written scope, exclusions and prices for any services you plan to use. Hong Kong Customs states that it levies no Customs tariff on imports and exports.

That statement covers tariffs only; check which other taxes, fees or overseas obligations apply to your purchase and intended use.

Complete the checks before you commit

Build a shortlist. For readers turning a buy yacht hong kong search into a shortlist, Marine Italia Asia offers new-yacht sales, brokerage listings and maintenance support; evaluate the individual vessel independently.

ASIAMARINE also provides sale listings and ownership-support services.

Ask dealers to identify boats that fit your intended use and berth limits, and clarify whom the broker represents.

Appoint your own surveyor and adviser to assess the vessel and purchase terms.

Inspect independently. Choose a surveyor experienced with the hull type; a catamaran’s twin hulls and the structure connecting them deserve someone who inspects them regularly.

Pair the survey with a sea trial and review the service records. Agree purchase conditions covering the survey and sea trial, how defects will be priced or repaired, and what happens to your deposit if the findings are unsatisfactory.

The RYA’s buyer checklist prompts buyers to address survey or sea-trial conditions and clear title. These are general safeguards rather than statements of Hong Kong legal rights.

Confirm the paperwork. Ask your adviser to verify ownership, check for any mortgage, list the included equipment and confirm the transfer documents.

For a boat based in Hong Kong, the Marine Department’s Class IV guidance, revised May 2025, requires a Certificate of Ownership and an Operating Licence before the vessel operates in local waters.

Confirm that the person in charge holds certification accepted for the vessel. The Grade 2 operator certificate covers pleasure vessels of no more than 15 metres overall in Hong Kong waters, so check which certification your boat requires.

Arrange insurance before handover. Visiting-yacht rules are separate: a visiting yacht staying in Hong Kong waters for more than 182 days out of 365 consecutive days must be licensed locally.

Before you sign, ask Marine Italia Asia, ASIAMARINE or any other seller or broker to confirm the final specification and inventory, price, payment schedule and handover responsibilities in writing. Keep these with the berth agreement, survey findings and agreed repair schedule.
