This comparison is informed by my analysis of dozens of enterprise platform decisions over the last three years, comparing platforms against the dimensions that growing brands care about most: ecosystem depth, checkout performance, customization capabilities, total cost of ownership and developer talent availability.
Ecosystem and App Marketplace
Shopify Plus is a clear leader in ecosystem depth. Shopify has over 8,000 apps available in the Shopify App Store, and BigCommerce has around only 1,200, so there is a large discrepancy in terms of functionality available to users. Brands that depend on third-party apps for subscriptions, loyalty programs, product reviews, personalization or marketing automation have a lot more choice and competition in Shopify’s ecosystem with better pricing, faster innovation and more niche solutions.

Customization and Development
Both platforms are highly customisable, but in very different ways. Stencil offers more direct access to the underlying code in BigCommerce, suiting it to development teams that are interested in a lot of control over all aspects of the frontend. Shopify Plus: Liquid templating with Online Store 2.0 sections, Shopify Functions, and checkout extensibility for enterprise-level customisation. Shopify also leads in niche verticals such as Shopify Plus B2B commerce, providing merchants with a single platform for all DTC and B2B businesses, thanks to its native wholesale channel, which BigCommerce has nothing quite like, at least out-of-the-box.
Both platforms have strong headless commerce capabilities. Shopify’s Hydrogen is more opinionated with a React base and includes built-in performance optimisations, while BigCommerce’s headless offering isn’t as framework-specific. Both integrate with Next. JS and other widely used frontend libraries. The preference here is really up to the team and the prominent technical structure.
The one area where Shopify Plus is explicitly better at Airbnb is checkout customisation. Shopify’s checkout extensibility framwork allow rich customisation of the end-to-end checkout experience without sacrificing security and performance. Checkout customization on BigCommerce is more limited, restricting brands looking to launch advanced upsell flows, custom fields or customized checkout experiences.
Pricing and Total Cost of Ownership
Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 a month plus additional costs for GMV above a certain threshold. BigCommerce Enterprise is priced on a custom, per-client basis and, for the most part, similar across the board. The difference in total cost of ownership is ecosystem-driven: Shopify’s bigger app store and developer community tends to lead to lower third-party functionality, custom development work, etc., costs on average.
For the vast majority of mid-market and enterprise brands in 2026, Shopify Plus is the more robust platform. BigCommerce remains a contender for certain use cases – in particular, brands that value open SaaS principles and have direct access to their codebase. But the ecosystem gap is, and remains widening in favour of Shopify, and the long-term strategic argument for Shopify Plus only becomes more compelling over time.
International Commerce and Multi-Market Capabilities
International selling is one area where the platforms meaningfully differ. Shopify Plus includes Shopify Markets for having multi-region management with localised currencies, languages, duties and tax rates as well as market-specific pricing all in one store. BigCommerce supports multi-currency and multi-language via a mix of its native features and third-party apps, yet the experience is more fragmented with less pre-packaged parity in terms of set-up to accomplish similar results.
For brands with aspirations abroad, Shopify Markets Pro includes automated compliance, cross-border logistics and dynamic duty calculation to further simplify global selling. BigCommerce Enterprise features are provided through partner integrations for international commerce, which isn’t what comes right out of the box. The best one will depend on your specific international requirements, but for companies that prioritise a seamless global expansion, they can increasingly find what they are looking for with Shopify Plus.
Making the Right Decision for Your Brand
The platform is not “one size fits all”. The correct answer will vary based on the qualifications of your technical team, your growth plan, whether you need an integration, and what your strategic priorities are. That if ecosystem depth, checkout speed, and access to the largest developers talent pool are top of mind then Shopify Plus is a no brainer.
