Massara: An Ode to Campania

The most exciting new addition to New York’s dining scene is Massara, an Italian eatery located in the heart of Flatiron. Helmed by Chef Stefano Secchi, known for his work at the Michelin-starred Rezdôra, Massara brings a taste of Southern Italy to NYC with a focus on the flavors and traditions of the Campania region. The name of the establishment itself carries deep cultural significance, meaning “matriarch” and “head of the household” in the Campanian dialect.

Respect for Italian Cuisine

Massara’s menu is a testament to Chef Secchi’s deep respect for Italian cuisine, particularly the bold flavors of Campania. Designed for sharing, the menu encourages diners to experience a variety of dishes that highlight fresh, high-quality ingredients sourced both locally and from Italy.

One of the standout dishes is “If Pasta Fredda was Eaten in Amalfi,” a unique take on a cold pasta dish featuring thick noodles paired with a puréed tomato-based sauce, shrimp, and sea urchin. Another must-try is the “Cheesemakers Raviolini,” a delicate pasta dish filled with burrata imported from Campania. The dish reflects the region’s rich dairy traditions and the chef’s commitment to authenticity. Other menu highlights include wood-fired pizzas, roasted meats, and vegetable dishes, all prepared with traditional techniques and modern flair.

Massara also offers an Italian infused brunch menu. Diners can enjoy dishes like the “Uova in Purgatorio,” a classic Southern Italian dish of baked eggs in a spicy tomato sauce served with crusty house-made bread, perfect for dipping.

In addition to its signature dishes, Massara offers an impressive selection of wines, which showcases a range of Italian varieties, including reds from Campania’s volcanic soil and whites that complement the restaurant’s seafood offerings.  For those who prefer cocktails, the bar program offers a selection of Italian-inspired drinks, including variations on classic Negronis and spritzes infused with citrus and aromatic herbs.

Classic Hospitality

Beyond its food, Massara transports guests to Southern Italy with its warm and inviting ambiance meant to evoke an Italian farmhouse. Complete with a custom-built wood-burning oven as the centerpiece, the two-story space accommodates up to 105 guests and features a large communal table crafted from the building’s original wooden beams. The attention to detail extends to the restaurant’s service. Guests can expect knowledgeable staff who are eager to guide them through the menu, offering recommendations that cater to every diner.

Massara also hosts special events and tasting menus. These curated experiences provide diners with the opportunity to explore the nuances of regional Italian cuisine in a carefully crafted setting. Seasonal tasting menus, wine pairing events, and chef-led experiences offer an extra layer of depth to Massara’s dining experience.

Authentic and Innovative

As Massara continues to establish itself in the NYC dining scene, it stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of Italian cuisine. By blending tradition with innovation, it not only pays homage to the flavors of Campania but also sets a new standard for Italian dining in the city. Whether you are savoring a meticulously crafted pasta dish, indulging in a wood-fired pizza, or exploring the thoughtfully curated wine list, Massara ensures that every meal is a journey worth taking.
