Five Challenges to Consider for 2026

Well, we’ve hit October and we’re at that stage of the year where we start to think about the next one. Yes, it’s all about rounding off 2025 and making sure that 2026 is YOUR year. And a year to remember.

So how about making some grand plans? Taking on some challenges that can improve your life or give you some memories that’ll last a lifetime.

To help you decide what to take on in 2026, here are five challenges we’ve been considering, that we think could make all the difference…

Give Up Alcohol or Reduce Consumption

Alcohol is often seen as a social lubricant or a way to unwind after a busy day. However, it can have significant effects on both physical and mental health. Taking a break from alcohol, whether temporarily through initiatives like Dry January or permanently, offers numerous benefits.

It’s something that more of us really should be considering, mainly because there are actually more of us needing alcohol help than ever before. Whether managing to do it alone, or needing help from professionals, such in rehab, giving up the booze will have a drastic impact on your life.

Giving up alcohol can improve liver function, boost energy, and enhance mental clarity. Many people also notice better sleep, reduced anxiety, and a greater sense of control over their habits.

Embrace a Digital Detox

In our increasingly connected world, screens dominate much of our attention. Social media, emails, and constant notifications can lead to stress, distraction, and poor sleep. A digital detox, setting aside regular periods without devices, can be a valuable challenge in 2025.

Reducing screen time helps improve focus, emotional wellbeing, and mindfulness. It encourages more face-to-face interactions and allows time for activities that bring genuine joy, such as reading, cooking, or spending time in nature. Even small adjustments, like avoiding phones before bedtime or designating one day a week as screen-free, can make a noticeable difference.

Commit to a Physical Challenge

Physical challenges, from training for a 5K run to committing to a regular fitness routine, push both body and mind. Exercise not only improves cardiovascular health, strength, and endurance but also has profound mental health benefits.

For 2026, consider setting a goal that is achievable yet stretches your abilities. This could include joining a sports club, starting a yoga practice, or gradually increasing your daily step count. The sense of accomplishment that comes from achieving a physical challenge boosts confidence and reinforces the habit of perseverance.

Prioritise Mental Health

Mental health is often overlooked until problems arise. Proactively challenging yourself to prioritise your emotional wellbeing can have far-reaching benefits.

This could involve regular therapy sessions, journaling, meditation, or developing stress management techniques. Setting boundaries in work or social situations is another important step. A mental health challenge encourages self-reflection, resilience, and greater emotional balance, all of which enhance overall quality of life.

Learn Something New

Finally, learning a new skill or hobby is a challenge that stimulates the mind and expands horizons. Next year, consider taking on an activity that pushes you outside your comfort zone, whether it’s learning a musical instrument, a foreign language, cooking, or a creative pursuit.

Learning fosters problem-solving skills, boosts memory, and provides a sense of accomplishment. It also introduces opportunities for social connection, whether through classes, workshops, or online communities. Committing to personal growth through learning encourages adaptability and a mindset of continuous improvement.
