Dr. Mesa: Manhattan’s Premiere Plastic Surgeon
“I always knew that I wanted to work in New York because I know it is where the best plastic surgeons come,” says Plastic Surgeon, Dr. John Mesa.
Now, Dr. Mesa is within that group of top plastic surgeons himself. Mesa, originally from Colombia, came to the United States to take on surgical training and is known as a superstar in his field – and on social media. This hard-working doctor who studied at Harvard, is also a triple fellowship-trained plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic plastic surgery for the face and neck.
“I did research and fellowships and started working in New Jersey,” explains Dr. Mesa. “I also wanted to work in Miami, so I wound up opening a third office there as well.”
As the proud owner of three successful practices, Dr. Mesa believes that the pandemic has dramatically affected the world of plastic surgery as patients have had more downtime to recover.
“Those who are doing more video calls see themselves all the time on camera. This has made them more conscious of things they would like done.”
Although Mesa specializes in a variety of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, his current main specialty is Buccal Fat Removal. Buccal Fat Removal involves the removal of fullness from the cheeks, helping clients to achieve a supermodel like look. This procedure has grown in popularity popular due to social media, where many admire and would like to achieve the chiseled cheeks of the Kardashian’s. Recently, Chrissy Teigen admitted she underwent buccal fat removal to chieve a thinner and more chiseled facial look.
“It’s the American dream to become famous, and now everyone can look like they are,” says Mesa. “I have everyone from those in their late teens to their 50’s and above coming for this procedure.”
Aside from Buccal, Dr. Mesa also offers minimally invasive procedures from the neck up, such as facial contouring. The chin liposuction and face tightening, including the jowl area, are touched with tiny incisions under local anesthesia. Face and neck lifts are also done under local anesthesia, allowing the patient to remain wide awake. Using local anesthesia ensures that the procedure remains as painless as possible, while helping to relieve anxiety for patients as they can avoid side effects from sedation or general anesthesia, as well as feeling tired or developing hematoma. Patients are also able to take care of themselves easily post-procedure.
When it comes to advising patients, Dr. Mesa gives his honest opinion, something he believes is as important as his highly trained hands.
“For example, if you have high cheekbones, you need fillers, not buccal fat removal. “It’s important as a plastic surgeon to have integrity and professionalism.”
Dr. Mesa’s main tip for landing the ideal plastic surgeon for oneself is to ensure that the surgeon has board certification in plastic surgery. He also believes that it is crucial to look for a plastic surgeon who specializes in the area you’re looking to have surgery on.
“The more concentrated in an area you are, the more of an expert you become. Also, check before and after reviews and make sure you have a good rapport and trust with your surgeon…don’t go by price, but qualification.”
