A Producer’s Path: Behind the Scenes of Cindy Kay Kang’s Delicate Balancing Act

Cindy Kay Kang built her career at the intersection of storytelling, technology, and execution.

As a producer, she has put her talent to work across commercial campaigns, branded content, music videos, digital media, and virtual production workflows. Along the way, Kang has developed a reputation for helping productions move efficiently, from the development phase through final delivery, all while balancing ambition with technical and operational demands.

Kang credits her multifaceted producing style to her ability to do what many producers cannot: understand a production from multiple sides.

“I see producing as understanding people, technology, storytelling, and execution at the same time,” she says.

Initially, she was a photographer. This laid the visual foundations for her work and led her to more camera and on-set production roles. Over time, Kang built up the hands-on experience that has helped her so well, from camera assisting, to lighting, grip, and production support.

“I was building an understanding of production from multiple perspectives,” she remarks, “which allowed me to move into larger producing responsibilities.”

From WLab …

Eventually Kang found herself at WLab, a New York-based virtual production studio affiliated with NYU Tandon @ The Yard. WLab, where she served as a producer in 2023 and 2024, was a place where filmmaking and real-time technology operated side by side.

The studio specialized in Unreal Engine workflows, LED wall production, motion capture, in-camera visual effects, and real-time 3D environments. As a producer, Kang was charged with managing timelines, budgets, vendors, crews, logistics, and communication. She liaised between its creative and technical departments while helping productions navigate technically sophisticated virtual production workflows.

At WLab, Kang worked on commercial and branded productions connected to clients including e.l.f. Cosmetics, Verizon, Fernet-Branca, Sony Music, and the Ad Council. Several of the projects she contributed to later received national visibility through major campaigns, industry press coverage, and award recognition.

One of those productions was Peculiar Behavior, a nationally distributed e.l.f. SKIN campaign that utilized a specialized real-time virtual production workflow. Kang served as a producer representing WLab, coordinating between 3D artists, camera teams, creative stakeholders, and the production company to integrate a live-rendered virtual environment into the shoot.

The production involved transporting WLab’s rendering systems and virtual production infrastructure to Universal Studios in Los Angeles, where the virtual background environment synchronized live with camera movement during filming.

Another major campaign Kang supported was Play Defense Against Flu, a national public health campaign developed by the Ad Council in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Medical Association (AMA). Produced at WLab’s Brooklyn Navy Yard virtual production studio, the campaign incorporated LED volume technology and real-time 3D environments that responded dynamically to camera movement during filming.

… to Madwell

Her role expanded further after WLab was acquired by the Brooklyn-based independent advertising agency Madwell. There, Kang served as Operations Lead and In-House Producer, overseeing production operations for commercial, branded content, and virtual production projects while managing cross-department coordination across multiple concurrent productions.

Part of her work involved designing and implementing a centralized project-tracking system that streamlined calendars, invoices, production assets, paperwork, and workflow communication. She also supported studio readiness, client visits, equipment organization, and operational infrastructure as Madwell expanded its virtual production capabilities.

“My core expertise is producing in environments where creative ideas, technical execution, and client goals all need to be carefully balanced,” Kang says. “Different productions have different priorities, and my work has trained me to understand how to balance creative ambition with practical execution.”

Alongside her production work, Kang frequently coordinates bilingual and international productions, working in both Mandarin and English with clients, crews, talent, and creative teams. On the Taiwanese reality series Have a Seat, she served as a liaison between the Taiwan-based production team and the New York crew, helping bridge communication, cultural expectations, and production coordination.

“I’m proud that I can play that role, all while keeping work organized and moving along,” she says.

A product of New York

Although Kang’s professional experience has become central to her career, her academic background helped shape her work’s visual and strategic foundation. She earned a bachelor of fine arts from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, studying photography and imaging with a minor in the business of entertainment, media, and technology, and later completed a master’s degree in strategic communication at Columbia University.

Kang credits Tisch with developing her understanding of image-making, composition, lighting, and visual storytelling, while Columbia strengthened her approach to communication strategy, audience engagement, and brand storytelling across commercial productions.

In addition to her producing work, Kang has continued contributing to productions through technical and camera department roles, including work as a camera operator, assistant camera, gaffer, grip, and electric.

She also maintains an active photography practice. Her fashion photography project Superposition was featured by Fashion Crossover London, reflecting the continued influence of photography on her visual approach to production and storytelling.

Staying on track

Today, Kang continues producing commercial campaigns, short films, branded content, and digital productions, overseeing projects from early planning through final wrap. Her responsibilities include budgeting, scheduling, crew coordination, equipment and location planning, transportation, vendor management, on-set logistics, and post-production coordination.

“Before shoots, I help build the structure that allows productions to run smoothly,” she says. “During production, I focus on supporting the crew, solving problems quickly, and keeping the team on track.”

Looking ahead, Kang hopes to continue expanding her work across traditional production, virtual production, and AI-driven visual creation. As production technology continues to evolve, she believes producers must understand both the strengths and limitations of emerging tools in order to guide projects responsibly and creatively.

“I want to become a producer and brand storyteller who can work across traditional production, virtual production, and AI-driven visual creation,” Kang says. “Success to me means helping productions make smarter decisions while still creating work that carries taste, emotion, and genuine human intention.”
